Greener Pastures Do Not Exist.
There I’ve said it- They don’t exist. It is an idiom that refers to better things but better how? and how often are they truly better? We leave one person and move to another who we think will make us happier, never realizing that we alone can decide our happiness.
We leave one job with the hope that that the ‘green’ pastures will make us richer and more fulfilled but it doesn’t. Instead we meet more intense deadlines, bitchier, more competitive co-workers, less sleep and money we can’t enjoy because we are constantly working.
We leave one country in search of the ‘Dream’ – the big house, fancy car, financial stability. Others leave looking for the better climate, lifestyle, lower taxes, etc. How many of us return to our original pasture having learnt the hard way that life is hard, flawed and filled with sacrifices no matter which side of the fence you are on.
These greener pastures are simply a myth,an illusion meant to motivate some towards their goals, while for others it is a source of depression – the unattainable dream that they are somehow too weak to achieve. Either way, the idea of ‘greener pastures’ should be abolished.
Our greener pasture is the ‘NOW‘ – the times that we are now sharing with loved ones, the struggles and losses that we are currently experiencing, that are going to strengthen us for tomorrow.
It is fine to dream, plan ahead, make goals and strive towards them but it is dangerous to think that somewhere else is better or ‘greener’. When we do that we are setting ourselves up for heartache and regret.
“Greener pastures are what we make it today, right where we are now.”
